It's not about the substance, it's about the visual presentation and the mood. Nicolas Winding Refn isn't know for his deep and complex plots. Most of his movies are pretty straight forward. In my opinion his movies are an experience in which the viewer interprets the meaning of the "story".
Just my 2 cents. I hated Neon Demon after the initial viewing, but the movie grew on me and I think it's pretty good. Just an unique experience.

Neon Demon is cliché as shit but pretty nice looking and well acted so I thought it was a decent watch but I don't think Refn managed to pull off what he was going for with Neon Demon. He needs a better story or more interesting themes, I don't think he's good enough to go Terrence Malick mode.
