La La Land (2016)
Finally found time to go to the cinema and watch this critically appraised movie. I was enjoyable, but not as good as people have claimed imo. It's kind of an homage to the memorable musicals of the 30s-50s, but something felt off. Some of the songs felt silly and uncalled for, and some were overdone with a bunch of extras dancing around (this is more common in modern musicals, personally I'm not a fan of this).
At times it did achieve that classic atmosphere though. While still notably distinct especially in terms of choreography, the scene where Stone and Gosling sing and dance while arguing and she's changing her shoes after the party, gave me some "Shall We Dance" vibes... it reminded me of the famous skating scene with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire ( you know, the famous "you say pot-ate-o, and I say po-tah-to"). The movie lacked some kind of comic relief though. Those classic musicals like "Swing Time", "Singin' In The Rain", "Top Hat", etc always had some goofy character or some comedy of errors element to deliver some laughs. The comedy in La La Land felt half-assed... I understand that Chazelle decided to focus more on drama than comedy, but those comical bits he included just didn't work out.
The characters were shallow and predictable too. If you're going to make the script focus solely on two characters then you should at least make them more interesting or give them some proper depth or character development.
The cinematography was nice at times though, I enjoyed some of the shots... especially when emphasizing sadness and loneliness, the movie provides some powerful images. I think the last half of the film is the part that works out best... takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride of joy and sadness, that makes the viewer relate to the characters and story.
Over all I enjoyed it, but I don't think it deserved all that acclaim. I've not seen all the Oscar nominated movies so I can't say which film deserved the best movie award, but imo it definitely wasn't La La Land. For instance Arrival was better imo.
