It is virtue signaling by Hollywood to let the world know they are woke and not racist. Basically an over correction to try and fit the agenda of today's political climate.
I am all for giving minorities roles but to change characters into minorities during adaptions is a very transparent and lame way to make it seem like you care.
Casting red heads doesn't get you brownie points in Hollywood.
Redheads are much more of a minority than black people though and they are getting completely erased in media. It's baffling.
Anyways other than that the episode sucked. 3/10 they fucked up the story way too much in stupid ways that just made everything nonsensical.
In the game the entire trip to Tommy was so Tommy could take Ellie to the fireflys cuz he used to be one, and Joel told Ellie that multiple times. In the show he only went to see Tommy to make sure he was ok, having Tommy take Ellie wasn't set up at all previously. In the game there was a bit of bad blood between the two brothers but they still trusted eachother, in the show there was no bad blood but also no trust? Then the very next scene it changed to a bunch of bad blood but also trust? Random swap for no reason?
And then Ellie suddenly knew Joel wanted to pawn her off despite not being involved in any conversation about it at all? They just did that scene where she was upset at Joel cuz it was in the game but it made zero fucking sense in the show cuz it wasn't set up.
Then the VERY next scene Joel magically changed his mind? Just randomly with nothing else happening? Maybe they should've spent less time on random meaningless bullshit so they could've done the Ellie running away bit to give Joel a reason to stay? You know, proper storytelling? No? Rather spend 15 minutes with 2 old people you made up for no reason to do literally nothing except name a river for no good reason cuz it's immediately resolved the next scene when we realize it's actually Jackson?
And finally the end, where Joel gets stabbed and then pulls the object out like a fucking idiot? How has he been alive for 50 odd years, 20 of them in an apocalypse, and not learned you don't pull that shit out? In the game he HAD to "pull it out" cuz he actually fell on a piece of rebar, the show doing it with a bat was just fucking stupid.
Also the complete lack of any action is getting annoying.
