I think the worst thing about this show is that the writers don't actually realize that their main character is a terrible person. I mean in shows like Sopranos or Breaking Bad, they know enough to address the total moral ambiguity of their actions, and bring about the terrible consequences of their actions. With Dexter, he just keeps getting away with everything he does, looking like a white knight in shining armor, and everyone around him loves him. And they package everything so nicely for him; all his victims are assholes and he can find all the evidence he needs in one giftbasket ten minutes into his first break-in.
The only person that really saw Dexter to his true extent - the way he kills in cold blood and disposes of the bodies - was horrified and wanted to put him away for life (Doakes). And rightfully so. But we saw how the show handled him.
This was a fitting ending for a show that hasn't been good for about four seasons. He gets away with it. It's hilarious... the writers have such a hard on for him, they can't even let anything bad happen to him. It's also great evidence for the fact that they're making it up as they go. I mean... the talk with Deb and Quinn in the ambulance, about how she has to do a lot of good to make up for the bad. That could have tied in perfectly to her making a full confession and turning Dexter in. The problem is, the writers don't see that as a "good" thing because they actually think Dexter is a good person.
I see him as a good person. Wouldn't it be great to have some guy killing murderers and rapists instead of them getting out of prison or not even going to jail because someone messed up evidence , etc..
