I know that.... It must be only for the older generation who likes really old movies.
Why do you care? Obviously older movies are not your thing. You feel they're dated, poorly made and can't possibly be considered good when compared to modern cinema. That's your opinion, and like his opinion, you're entitled to it. A lot of people love older films and can find considerable enjoyment in them for numerous reasons. I'm not sure why you feel the need to bash something simply because it's old. I've rewatched a number of older films recently and I would agree that the acting, directing, writing and a number of other things are subpar at best, but that's just my opinion. While I personally no longer enjoy most things pre 1970, I can understand why others do, and it doesn't bother me or confuse me as to why those people would give older movies such high ratings.
The original trilogy is of course overrated. The acting is atrocious, a lot of it is cheesy as hell and obviously the special effects are horrible when compared with what we have today. However, there's more to it though. It was a beautiful story, it helped bring sci-fi reach mainstream acclaim and opened the doors for all the fantastic films we have today. The story itself was fantastic, and outside of a truly phoned-in final act in Jedi, the entire thing was magnificent and is one of the main reasons we're blessed with so many amazing sci-fi movies today.
