The Great Gatsby (2013)

I liked it. I really enjoyed the colours, the decorations, and the ambience. The use of electro-swing and retro styled covers of modern music was interesting... I liked how it fit in... it's obvious that Luhrmann, who also directed that modern version of Romeo and Juliet, is into these things, and I think he executed it nicely here... his Gatsby is all excess and exaggeration, so why not go over board with the music as well. The film is perhaps a bit longer than it needs to be and the script has it's highs and lows, but over all I think the end product was pretty good.

Road Show (1941)

As a big fan of some of the Harold Lloyd movies Hal Roach had directed, I was looking forward to seeing a Roach comedy without Lloyd. Unfortunately, it's not very good, although it had some funny moments.

There's a lot of dated casual racism though... and I do mean a lot. Like in the scene that goes from 1:01:30 to 1:02:55 (watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hysS7MY5-YQ )... yeah, that one just amused me because of how wrong it feels today, but there are a bunch of similar gags throughout the film and it does get to a point where it's kind of awkward, even for someone like me who is aware of the historical context and doesn't get offended by these kind of things.

Sing Street

As much as I liked Begin Again, the third feature of John Carney didn't offer anything interesting for me.
Typical coming of age story with kids beeing smartasses and act way more grown up than any other adult.
