Yeah, I feel you, and it's pretty strange indeed. Memento has a pretty indie / low-budget vibe to it, perhaps they feel like it could reach new audience if they make it feel more like a Hollywood thing with faster cuts, more lightning, more music, better actors and so on.

Hollywood remaking things doesn't bother me because, you like you said, remakeks does't take away from the original. However, I usually don't watch them.

Sword of a Stranger - meh, didn't connect with the characters, some nice fightscenese but totally forgetable.

Nah I personally thought the acting was fine but I'm trying to think like Hollywood, none of the actors are stars. They've done other things sure but for many people they're going to be unknowns and that might be a turn off. If you get Di Caprio to play the dude with no memory you can reach completely new markets.

Valhalla Rising (2009)

After watching Drive I realized I had this other movie stored by the same director in my computer. Watched it today... and I liked it. Interesting viking themed movie with a dark crude atmosphere and some interesting and at times experimental visuals. The pace is perhaps a bit too slow, but I enjoyed the over all product.
