You told Melville to shove it, but Le Cercle Rouge is probably the best that I've seen. I'd also put The Killing above Heat.
And when I google "best heist films", Bonnie and Clyde shows up in some lists. I don't know if I would consider that a true "heist film", but if you do then that is #1 for me.
Melville I consider a great technical director but his films pack no emotional punch, they're all style. He has memorable scenes but no memorable characters that's why Heat wins in my book.
You take something like Le Samourai, it's a very, very impressive film that I'll definitely watch again but at the end of the day it's about a guy who's only memorable characteristic is his hat. Not exactly shakespeare-tier writing.
