It honestly surprised me; I don't mean I was expecting something sub-par - the other 2 are good films in their own right - but I was expecting something more or less the same. Midnight surpassed those 2 in in terms of depth of characterization (see the excellent hotel scene) and both actors elevated their performances.
I also watched Clouds of Sils Maria (2014), which shares somewhat of a kinship to Cassavetes' own Opening Night - Opening Night-lite, if you will - but lacks the depth of that film's central character. It's a good, solid little film, mostly due to the acting of Binoche.
