Religion as a mean to control people was an important theme I think.

I loved this as a kid

I remember it as a story about how someone can do evil and then use power and religion to hide behind. Sean Conner was like Sherlock Holmes who was out to discover the truth. Only that he had to be more careful because he was risking his life by questioning things.

It's such an old film, was it restored in any way or what did you watch it on?

Yes that's excactly right, the high up members of the church had all the power and abused it, used religion and fear of purgatory to control the plebians and hid "dangerous" books from intellectuals like Sean Connerys character.

I watched a blu ray rip so picture was fine, I just don't think the film had anything to say that I hadn't already thought of myself that is all. I get why other people might get more out of it.

I saw that film 30 years ago, and it really opened my eyes to how people can use power to hide. Dont know if you were alive then but even then it was almost considered blasphemy to even question someone from the Church or a Politician, let alone way back then. I still see it today, try to question a Doctor or if you live in Russia , try questioning Putin and see if your still alive in a year.

I really can't remember how good the film was in terms of Cinematic greatness, I just remember i was pretty influential in the idea and ways of questioning authority.

That explain some of it then, I was not alive during time of release so maybe that's why some of it's ideas that maybe had a huge impact back then feels like common knowledge to me, oh well

In terms of cinematic quality it's ok, not amazing but holds up. I'm a pretty picky guy though.
