In the last of us they bombed around the QZs to try and create a kind of "safe space" no man's land situation to take out large groups and so they could more easily defend the QZs.

I agree with addon's opinion tho.

If majority of the population turns into zombies they won't be driving or going outside. They will be locked up in their house. Zombies don't use gas so there will be an abundance of abandoned cars, tankers and shipping containers full of gas. The tanks, bulldozers and other heavy machines would be abandoned. You don't need to drive for hours with a tank or a digger. Get some friends to round up zombies to come to you. Put on a siren and drive them to the open area. There is many heavy machines around industrial areas. One runs out of gas hop into another one or fill it up after you kill a wave of zombies.
Running over hoards of zombies is but one of many effective ways to kill mass zombies.
You could also funnel them onto a bridge and set up few dozen men with hunting rifles and shoot them all day.
You could fill a fire truck with gas instead of water and spray them from the safety of high ground or behind a fence then light them up.
You could set up kill boxes as you mentioned
You could get some dynamite grenades, Molotov cocktails literally any military grade explosives which America has abundance and just blow them up.
Send a kill squad every day that goes out and shoots zombies all day comeback and repeat. There is only so many zombies in your town or city before you eventually kill them all. I live in a town of 80,000 people even if all of them turned into zombies and it was just me and say 10 other people left we would need to shoot 10 zombies a day for a couple of years maximum.
Find any well fenced off area, or a bridge, other side of a river bank or any obstacle which zombies cannot cross proceed to shoot and throw Molotov cocktails at them from the other side.
You could set up a trap that involves them walking over a slippery/rotating surface. Just at the top of my head find 2 buildings of same height, fix a thin plank that requires balance to walk across, grease it up so that anyone trying to cross would easily slip down onto hard concrete below. Put a goat on one side and lock the place up so that to get to the goat is from the other side. Zombies will eventually die to gravity as they try and get the goat. Bring goat some hay and water every few days and watch the zombies pile up. Use a bulldozer to move the corpses repeat untill they all die.

It was from the opening scene with Bill the self sufficient practical dude surviving the zombie apocalypse. That got me thinking what it would be like to live in that world.

Zombies can barely walk straight, they cannot swim its basically cannon unless someone decides to give them alternative superpowers. Any body of water with a strong current they will be swept away or sink to the bottom. Why would I be throwing molotov cocktails across the river? I was merely illustrating obstacles and use appropriate weapons.
Molotov cocktails filled use motor oil, nailpolish, other highly flammable liquids etc will stick and burn long enough for zombies to die.
Don't get too hung up on cocktails cupcake as it's merely one of millions different weapons you can use. I haven't even began with explosives or more advanced weaponary like missiles. Up till now we were talking about baby stuff.
Better hide under your blankie booboo because you have no idea how effective people are at killing yet. Thousands of years of evolution and hunting, conquering we could blow the planet several times over with a push of a button if we wanted to but booboo thinks zombie too scawy and impossible to deal with.

That is a much better question. We have been struggling with that since the dawn of time. From mongoloid barbarians with no rules to now? I guess things will turn savage, every man for himself scenario. Then eventually groups will form, leaders develop, gangs then people will slowly start working back to some sort of government.

There are unfortunately people struggling with zombie problem. The helpless NPCs who are scared shitless of an idea that they will become zombies because they cannot outwit them.
