Sometimes you have to separate shows/movies from the existence of others and treat it as its own individual. The show fits within a certain genre, yes, and while it shares many similarities within that genre, as it should, it's still plenty unique.
In other words, how does this show fare on its own, without thinking about other shows/movies similar to it.
We can't always criticize shows/movies like what I said above, but it's certainly a different perspective and giving it its own fair criticism.
As a tv-show, maybe.
As a story, not a chance.
