but he's right, don't let the 80s nostalgia blind you from the underwhelming acting and the tame monster/government cover up part of the show

Tbh the acting is what made the show. The plot was simplistic and forgettable, which was probably by design. And there isn't really a whole lot of 80s nostalgia in the show. Plus the 80s is really the last decade that a show like this would have worked in, as some would say "it was a simpler time".

I don't think this show is 80s nostalgia (watch turbo kid for that), this is more like what the show would have been had it actually been filmed in the 80s. Its not over the top throwing 80s in your face like a nostalgia ride would actually be doing.

Well, the Duffer brothers:

- Tested their idea for the show by cutting together a fake trailer, with clips from over 25 movies from the 80's.
- Asked Millie Brown(Eleven) to act like ET.
- Instead of reading from the actual script, the kids auditioned with classic scenes from “Stand By Me.”
- They were also asked to watch “The Goonies” and “Poltergeist.”

So... I think they were going for 80's Nostalgia pretty hard

There is obviously a lot if influence from the movies of the time, but that is far from 80s nostalgia.

A love letter to 80s movies sure, but that's as far as it goes.

Sounds like you are splitting hairs there. You want to call it a 'love letter' and terry wanted to call it nostalgia.

You and him are probably describing the same viewpoint, but disagreeing about which word is more appropriate for it.

The 80s isn't only the 4-5 movies that heavily influenced the show is what I mean. It isn't a huge 80s fest that is constantly throwing things in your face. It is way more subtle, as if it were actually filmed in the 80s so there is an 80s vibe.

just finished. show was okay. has insane hype but nothing groundbreaking. just 10/10 child acting. directors must have some terrific analogies that kids can relate to or something lol. or kids had a great coach.

Just watched a video comparing some parts/scenes of stranger things with parts/scenes of famous movies and I'm kind of wondering where does the line between homage and completely ripping off go.

A significant portion of the shots in stranger things seem to be exact replicas of famous movies. From tone to sound and lighting.

My opinion, but I found the kids were terrific actors, especially Elle. She absolutely killed it! I loved the old style feel and soundtrack to complement, and enjoyed the young boys comradey. I enjoyed the show a lot, loves the characters, and in all honesty, thought the plot was the weakest part of it. That being said, can't wait for the next instalment. Very well done series, and my girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

care to link the video?

Without watching the video, I can only comment that I don't think it's that big of a deal most of the time. Just like in the music business, it is very common to draw similarities from your influences. Especially in this case, tone, sound, and lighting can be easily drawn from your influences because what works, works.

When you have a film in a certain genre, you can expect similar scenes to fulfill the quota of that genre. I think audiences are looking for it.

But again, I would like to watch this video to see the specifics.
