Id like to point out that Shane was basically right all along. Sophia was already dead they shouldn't have risked themselves searching for her. Randall was on the verge of escape and told Shane about how rough his group was. If he had gotten loose it could have led to the group's slaughter.
Yes, on one hand Shane makes the right decisions. All for the greater good of the group.
But think again of Dale's perspective (basically Shane's antagonist, not Rick): Should you forsake all humanity and decency in order to maximize your own group's survival chances? Is such a life worth living, where you will capture, torture and execute strangers? It posed a good moral dilemma.
That and the fac that Shane was going pretty damn crazy. Lori's sheepish apology just dropped him into the abyss of insanity. You can't really blame him for the whole fucked up situation, but Shane was both a guardian and a threat for the group, and they dealt with it. I'm not saying they dealt with it accordingly.
