Cyrus (2010)
Jonah Hill was awesome here. His acting was great and he was cast to perfection. I tried to put aside my extreme distaste for John C. Reilly, because I can't accept him as a romantic lead and I generally dislike him as an actor, but I just couldn't. I didn't buy into Tomei's attraction to him and I thought the way the writers had them meet and begin their relationship was kind of dumb.
I enjoyed the psychological aspect of this film and the "layers" it had, however, because I think they were applicable to real life. It seems like most people "put on a different face" in certain scenarios particularly when insecurity, jealousy, etc. are involved. Seeing Hill and Reilly go back and forth -- completely unbeknownst to Tomei's character -- was the best part of this film.
Beyond that I thought it was polished and I also always enjoy seeing a film set in my area (L.A.), so that's nice. I knock this movie a half of a star for the obnoxious camera movements and twitches, however. I have a theory this might have been done to create a sense of "voyeurism", in that we as the viewers are onto to something extremely private (this is also supported by the fact that they spend a ton of time communicating at a very quiet whisper), which romantic relationships tend to be.
It is definitely worth seeing for Jonah Hill on his own. His best role to date, for my money, is still his role in Superbad which couldn't have been any better, but this ranks as a close second.
