The shows messages are not a bad thing if teens watch it with parent/tutor/teacher that guides and explains to them what the show is about and how to interpret it. But most teens aren't going to watch it under supervision. For an angsty depressed teen this is potentially a loaded gun. That's why psychologist are very concerned about this... because the message can be very misleading for someone who is already confused about these issues.

You let me know when you see a headline that a person killed themselves because they watched 13 reasons why, and then you can go ahead and make those claims.

Until then, I don't see how the message is misleading in any way, shape, or form.

Fortunately, nobody has commited suicide (at least as of now). But here's something from the link I provided earlier:

Quote
Robert M. Avossa, superintendent of Palm Beach County schools in Florida, told parents that school personnel had seen a rise in the number of students who have hurt themselves and threatened suicide.

“As a father of a teenager and tween, I am very concerned about a dangerous trend we have observed in our schools in recent days,” Avossa wrote. “School District personnel have observed an increase in youth at-risk behavior at the elementary and middle school levels to include self-mutilation, threats of suicide, and multiple Baker Act incidents,” referring to a Florida law that allows people to be involuntarily committed. “Students involved in the recent incidents have articulated associations of their at-risk behavior to the ‘13 Reasons Why’ Netflix series,” she wrote.

It's what the show is about, so it can't be "too much."

Regardless, bullying of any sort carries on through adulthood, and it's a very important topic.

This is where parents, teacher, and adults have to step and and find out what's going on and we should be THANKFUL that a show has created a conversation to make this topic more widespread to help people who might be in danger.

The show is directed to teens and young adults, not their parents/teachers. If parents and teachers have to step in, it's because of the show's incompetence in delivering a message in accordance to their target audience. If the show's producers wanted to help depressed kids then they should have done so with a clear message they could understand and follow the guidelines of psychologists, which seem to be almost unanimously alarmed by the show's message and portrayal of suicide.

I'm talking about parents recognizing bullying or suicidal or self inflicting instances and doing something about it to help.

Remember.....this is based on a book. The show isn't about directly helping people with suicidal thoughts, it's about preventing people from even getting to the stage of having those thoughts by showing how varying types of bullying can hurt someone. We don't want people to ever be in situation where they have suicidal thoughts because society has wronged them. It's about prevention.

I honestly don't see any harm in this show, and Truely believe that it sends positive messages on trying to show people right from wrong in social behavior.

I'll be civil with you, i dug myself deep into this show, I analyzed it, I understood alll the messages and really believe that the messages it conveys are meaningful. I don't believe at all that there could be any negative impact. You don't have to agree with that, but claiming someone will take their life with a direct relation to the show is just not plausible to me.

Just watched episode 1. It's pretty heartbreaking and very expertly constructed to be so. The interactions between clay and Hannah, the small smiles and camera trickery. Almost as well crafted as Grave of the fireflies to make you feel. Only it doesn't really feel quite natural enough tbh.

Also I'm not sure at the moment what the message is supposed to be.

Antibullying or antisuicide? Something else?
