(In the comics, Shane dies much earlier than in the T.V. show I think judging by all of your comments.)
I was referring to the events of the prison, not the prison itself. Julie was the first to turn, the events are the prison canon wise are what confirmed it for everyone and resulted in Rick going back for Shane.

Hershel said earlier in the season that the swamp(which protected that side of the land and captured the walkers which otis would put in the barn) was going to freeze over due to the cold. Where's there one zombie (the one carl found) there's more.
