They're following the romero rules when it comes to zombies. The same concept in the comic book. The initial event that caused everything, whatever that event may be, has resulted in everyone being infected.
Any kind of death that leaves the brain intact results in a zombie. (in the comic, they discovered this in the events of the prison, which takes place after the farm)
So if you kill yourself, you're a zombie. Heart attack? zombie. Killed by someone else? zombie. That's how the world was overrun, people die all the time.
Zombie bites and scratches result in a lethal fever which results in a zombie as well.
Actually in the comics they discovered this while on the farm...a couple examples...
T-dawg's daughter and the farm boy do that whole suicide thing and T-dawg's daughter turns into a zombie...
2nd...
Rick storms off on a motorcycle to Shane's grave site where he was buried and discovers that Shane too turned into a zombie...
(In the comics, Shane dies much earlier than in the T.V. show I think judging by all of your comments.)
