I've seen enough now that it's less about being scary and more about what is good/enjoyable, because there are so many bad/mediocre ones. Finding any kind of creepiness factor is mostly a bonus at the point. I prefer cosmic horror in general, not because it's scary per say, but just to see the possibilities and where they take it. I'm seeing a lot of similar ones posted just skimming through, don't have time to see if mine have been listed, and while I did like the first Sinister, Insidious, and Conjuring to a lesser degree when they came out, I thought I'd write up a list of ones that I remember enjoying and I'm sure there are some I've left out. Not a fan of Hereditary or Midsommar, though The Witch was decent from what I remember, it's been a while. Again, not necessarily for the scariness factor just overall a good movie and/or worth the watch.

The Visit (starting it off with this one, which I really loved. Good acting, from kids no less, and great unsettling+creep factor)
Event Horizon (wish they went further, but still pretty good)
-Into the Mouth of Madness
-Dagon
I added these as a footnote, because while not the best, Lovecraftian Horror is hard to come by so.
The Void (another strong cosmic horror entry where there are few, and perhaps the best out of anything “recent” and stands above things like Anything for Jackson)
The Dark and the Wicked (again wish they took it further, but still enjoyed it)
Autopsy of Jane Doe (feels like a standard at this point)
Ouija: Origin of Evil(don't watch the first one, it's not a prerequisite nor was it worth watching, but 2 was surprisingly good to me and hope they make a 3rd)
The Grudge (the American version surprised me, maybe because I had low expectations on foreign remakes like what happened with The Ring, but I saw some other ppl might have mentioned this one and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would)
Last Shift (a gem and perhaps one of the “scarier” movies)
The Empty Man (Made it on my to watch again list)
The Lodge
Hold the Dark (same actress, and while not horror it's just too good not to put on a list. In the same way that No Country for Old Men is epic imo)

There's a lot with some good ideas/potential like The Fourth Kind and The Vigil, or ones I don't really remember but I wanna say were decent like Lights Out, but hopefully there's something in there that hasn't been mentioned yet. I'm always searching for good suggestions as well.

thx for sharing this huge list ! i seen some of em but others are directly in my watch list
i watched The Dark and the Wicked yesterday and realy enjoyed it also !

Just seen the conjuring for the first time. Holy balls that was decent.
And here I thought I'll never even flinch. I've sat through many scary movies and at this point I was like I am immune to this rubbish.
Ontop of that based on a true story.... Time to watch 2 and 3

All the movies were excellent .imo

reading the first 3 pages i must say i agree with many of you (which is weird for me because my friends do not like the movies i recommend to them lol)

for me, the conjuring (any of them) never scared me, for me it's the most overrated horror movie ever (after paranormal activity ofc) i like the performance of the girl hormiga or whatever her name is, but as someone mentioned is known as one of the scariest movies eveeeer but i just find it predictable and dull (but my friend loved it) :fume:

i love alien, and i think the babadook and sinister (the first one imo) are good good horror movies too, good performances from the actors and the stories are decent if not good

now, the real dread is:
