According to the sony email leaks, "It turns out that Garfield insulted Sony chief Kaz Hirai by snubbing him last summer in Rio de Janeiro at a big Sony gala celebrating the end of the World Cup." Hirai had a speech prepared to announce Garfield for the amazing spiderman 3, but garfield didn't show up.

It's a shame, garfield was better than maguire by far. The new guy isn't too bad from what we've seen, we'll have to see how they do with homecoming.
Though if you think about it, the email leaks are what probably paved the way for this sony and marvel deal because they were hurting for money.
