I can usually tell 95% of the time from the trailer.
But that's because I've watched more movies than 99.9% of people (probably a fact).

But sometimes the movie ends up being like 4x my expectations (Nightcrawler. Greatest movie ever.)
And sometimes it's way worse than I think it will be (Batman vs Superman)

You should really just watch the movie to tell though.

Mix of reviews, trailers, and peoples opinions that have seen it.

The movie's director is probably one of the first things I look at. If I've enjoyed some of his other work then I will often look forward to watching it, regardless of positive or negative critical reception it may have met.

Assuming the director of the movie in question isn't a decisive factor, I usually check the score on IMDB/FilmAffinity and my soulmates' rating of the movie on FilmAffinity. Recommendations from people whom I trust in this department work just as well.

Leaving all of that aside, I'm generally interested in watching movies nominated for the Oscars aswell, mostly because I keep hearing/reading about them and curiosity usually ends up sparking.

I avoid reading reviews (even if they are spoilerless), and I don't watch trailers unless I come across one (in the cinema, on the internet, etc).

Almost all of the listed options. I'm very active in the German movie sub forum and I put almost every recommendation on my watchlist.
Also watching a few movie dedicated channels on youtube.

I have my watchlist on imdb and if I liked a movie I'll read the recommended films on the same page or go by the other works the director has done.
IMDB Top 250 is a good guide to watch some pretty decent stuff and I'm always on the lookout the check all of them off.

Mostly I don't go by the scores, this applies to metacritic, imdb and rottentomatoes since they are all over the place and heavily subjective.

And yeah I try to catch up with all the oscar bait that's nominated for an academy award. Most of them extremly pretentios but here and there you catch a good one.

I avoid mostly every trailer, nowadays they spoil the entire movie. The plot synopsis is enough for that case.

No. I thought it would suck. But instead it was a giant pile of shit.
