It was already filmed though, during the filming of this season of the walking dead. They worked his absence on the set into the show, which is why he didn't have much air time during the second half of the show. Thought the same thing until he said on the talking dead that they've been done with the filming for a while.

For sure it cant be Rick cause the show wouldn't be much if it didn't glorify and try to legitimize psychopathic behavior.
