I'm pretty sure that's one of those policies that a company keeps around but never enforces, only pulling it out in a specific case that warrants it.

No they didn't. You'd be hard pressed to find an actual theatre with this policy. Despite the internet blowing up about this happening all over, it actually didn't.

Because it doesn't exist outside of maybe one or two theatres in the middle of bum fuck egypt.

The theater closest to me enforces it. You can't even buy the ticket without having your partner present and they stamp your ticket stub to indicate you were verified.
