I don't know what he meant by 'sad'. But for business reasons as you said, LOTR has basically set the ceiling for this genre. It's disappointing for audiences knowing it's not very realistic to hope that something better could eventually come along.
medieval fantasy/fantasy is a tough genre to sell to. Unless you have a HUGE franchise as LOTR is, it will always be difficult to compete because it's a niche genre. Big title names tend to draw crowds that usually don't support that particular genre.
The positive thing blizzard has with warcraft is an incredible amount of lore. Most medieval fantasy movies have a very bland/cliche plot, nothing really jumps out to be spectacular or different in a positive way. Warcraft, this movie, it's plot is pretty generic from the trailers, but I hope it leads to many movies because of all the lore available.
