it didnt end in one encounter, it took several encounters to finally out gun him. that kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering if this encounter was finally the last one.

Now he goes home.....he was extremely determined to kill the sniper. He didn't do continuous tours for nothing. He had a target to kill and he completed the task.

It's relevant to consider events depicted in the movie if the movie is based on a book, usually.

Based on the movie, he wanted to continue tours because he loved his country, and he wanted to complete the mission.
