You don't have to be a "fanboy" to watch the show. But, you also shouldn't force yourself to watch something you didn't really like, just because everyone else does. Think for yourself bud. That's all I'm saying. The show isn't for everyone.

i gave up on it, last one i watched was the s4 midseason finale where the conflict with the governor ended. sorta struggled to even get that far cuz it seemed like it was going down

It's only one episode in. And yes, that episode was very well done. To say this "season" is good, is a little too soon to tell.
