"In the very last scene of the series," Philips explained, "Dexter wakes up. And everybody is going to think, 'Oh, it was a dream.' And then the camera pulls back and back and back and then we realize, 'No, it's not a dream.' Dexter's opening his eyes and he's on the execution table at the Florida Penitentiary. They're just starting to administer the drugs and he looks out through the window to the observation gallery.

"And in the gallery are all the people that Dexter killed—including the Trinity Killer and the Ice Truck Killer (his brother Rudy), LaGuerta who he was responsible killing, Doakes who he's arguably responsible for, Rita, who he's arguably responsible for, Lila. All the big deaths, and also whoever the weekly episodic kills were. They are all there.

"That's what I envisioned for the ending of Dexter. That everything we've seen over the past eight seasons has happened in the several seconds from the time they start Dexter's execution to the time they finish the execution and he dies.  Literally, his life flashed before his eyes as he was about to die. I think it would have been a great, epic, very satisfying conclusion."

- Former Dexter Producer Clyde Phillips

Him dying would actually have been better than him becoming an exiled lumberjack.

Strange thing to say, killing of the main guy, but it definitely would have been better + not leaving any unanswered questions.

I like how he was isolated it showed that he still wanted to live hsi life but he actually just cared to much about harrison and hannah that he knew he had to be away from them because anyone close to him gets sucked into the black hole that is dexter and untilmately dies

It was bad... Him riding off into the hurricane after grabbing deb was kind of weird but not completely terrible. The last scene with him as a lumberjack is just fucking stupid. If your gonna keep dexter alive just do that... Don't show him committing suicide and then say "just kidding" dexter is actually superman, can survive class 5 hurricanes and has always wanted to chop down trees.

Why is this terrible ending still being discussed lol? All I'm gonna say is, thank god we had Breaking Bad to show people how to end a show correctly.

It was meant to happen that way, because the neurosurgeon even said that a true serial killer had no friends or family because they are only holding him/her back from their true potential, as you could see in the ending and that also explains why his main bitch didn't cry at the end at the end (because she either knew he wasn't dead, or because she thought he was dead but didn't care because she's a psychopath too).

Basically psychopaths have to live alone and evolve through learning that they can't have family or friends, because they are only setbacks.

That's what the whole meaning of the ending was.

It's widely considered to have been terrible. If you like it, then you enjoy really poorly written, corny ass television shows.

This sums it up perfectly...
