It was believed to be an explosion at first but now the more widely accepted theory is that there was only a very small expansion in the start and then there was a second "bang". You also have to keep in mind they are probably going to try to simplify things a lot since it is on basic cable and anyone can watch it.
Theory never really described it as a typical explosion, that is an over simplification of it. It is more like a bang followed by everything appearing, not from a focal but just appearing, if there was a beginning point then there would be an edge.
The universe has no center, ie point of explosion "bang", nor does it have an edge. As far as we know anyways.
