I don't watch this show but this story is related.
My gf watches this show but the other day she said she probably won't watch it anymore because they made it look like Troy Davis was so innocent and didn't deserve prison or the death penalty. I think she'd agree he didn't deserve the death penalty since she's against it but prison is another story.
She actually reports irl. She personally reported on the case and even interviewed the mother of the victim. The real victim was the mother of the person Davis killed. She received death threats daily and she wasn't even the one who sought the death penalty (the state of Georgia did). She also had to relive the death of her son every time he made an appeal or received news coverage for his "innocence." He had 20 years to prove his innocence but all evidence pointed towards his guilt and he even changed his plea to self defense at one point.
So yeah the end result of that story is she won't be watching The Newsroom anymore because as a real reporter she felt their take on Davis's coverage was way too liberal, inaccurate, and the real story was all the bs the mother had to put up with.
There were several witnesses and testimonies. Some of which recanted but recanting several years after the fact means nothing. And forensic evidence point directly at Davis. And he plead self defense at one point. So I'm gonna go with a resounding no the facts didn't lie this time.
I get where you're coming from though. But as a reporter she can't stand the facts and real issue of this case being turned upside down.
But anyways I didn't want to turn this into a political debate. Just an interesting side note about why she won't watch the show anymore. Their agenda was to portray him as an innocent soul who didn't deserve prison or death. They were wrong.
Wait what?
The show just portrayed the contrast in opinions. Which is totally fair and a real depiction of how people thought about the case scenario and death penalty at the time. The show didn't depict him as innocent, the show mentioned facts. In the show will refused to broadcast the story period, because he could only relay the facts and Dom wanted him to sway people's opinions with his own, he refused to do it.
This is one of the elements of the show that makes it really enjoyable for me, not being an American. The fact that the show isn't all about bullshit propaganda, the news team set out to be unbiased and fact driven, in all of the stories they cover
