I'm on season 5 of the Wire right now, so my judgement is helli biased since the Sopranos isn't as fresh in my mind, but I'd say they're damn close for different reasons. The acting in the Sopranos is outstanding, but the story and outrageously huge cast of the Wire are also captivating.

All in all though (again, probably partially due to bias), I'd say The Wire is my favorite. The Wire just has so much depth and realism; the Sopranos is no doubt an amazing story, but that's all it really is.

i saw a lot of realism with the visits to Dr. Melfi but i understand what you mean

there is very little of that kind of depth in Breaking Bad, which is why i think its a totally overrated action/suspense show

I love both The Wire and The Sopranos but I'm too big of a fan of James Gandolfini's acting to put The Wire above The Sopranos
The Wire's season two didn't it's case either

Naw, the visits with Dr. Melfi had virtually no realism with them; I'm in medical school myself, so trust me when I say that psychiatry is nothing like that, especially today.

As for the second season, the ending was pretty damn tight; I agree that the rest of it was pretty slow, but you'd be lying your ass off if you didn't say The Sopranos had the same kind of moments. The only difference, of course, being that the reason The Wire had those slow moments was to set the groundwork for its intricate story.
