Season 5 releases Sep 14th. Figured the new season deserved a fresh thread. Finally got around to watching this, binged it over the last 5 days. What follows is my tl;dr reaction to the series:
When comparing the greatest animated series of all-time, I think it is important to keep some perspective. Simpsons was the pioneer. Then there were 2nd generation productions like Family Guy, Futurama and South Park. Bojack fits into the 3rd generation greats, alongside Archer and Rick and Morty. It is fair to compare those 3.
Archer is pretty much a pure comedy. Yea it has a few plot threads that run through the series. Yea there's some "spy thriller action elements" to it. But mainly everything exists to set up the jokes. R&M, by comparison, spends a little more effort tackling serious themes, but remains a comedy at its core. Bojack has pretty much the same style and quality of content, but it moves the needle much more in the direction of serious, dramatic plotlines with less time spent on pure comedy. That doesn't mean there are no jokes. Quite the opposite. There are many hilarious jokes. Quite a few times throughout the series I had to pause the show to let my laughter subside before I could continue.
But there is so much depth to this show. It almost makes an attempt to hide its depth behind fluffy anthropomorphics to absolve the audience of responsibility of looking closely at the nuance if they would rather not invest the effort. But you can always feel the emotional pull at least a little, even if you don't mean to.
I'm satisfied ranking Bojack as the 3rd best, behind both Archer and R&M. But it's right there with them in the top tier.
