It's animated.

I have a distinct memory of watching this show the night before my wedding in 2005. That's a date I could never forget so I'm absolutely positive it existed then. Don't even bother posting any series that debuted later than 2005. How much older it could be, I'm not too sure. Not too old cuz the animation didn't seem outdated as I remember it.

Synopsis: The series follows the misadventures of alcoholic scientist and his easily influenced grandson, who split their time between domestic family life and intergalactic space travel. The scientist has recently moved in with his daughter's family. He spends most of his time taking his young grandson and later other family members on dangerous, outlandish adventures throughout the cosmos and alternate universes. Compounded with the already unstable family life, these events cause much distress at home and school.

It's eerily similar to the synopsis I gave. Unfortunately, my original post was insistent that the series I am looking for debuted no later than 2005. I specifically said to not bother posting anything newer.

maybe if you didn't quote from the wiki page it would cause less confusion, you sure you haven't swapped shows around in your memory?
