RT and other forms of rating give a general consensus through the eyes of critics and the public.
A movie rating website is not much different than reading reviews on amazon for a particular product. Do you buy products that are 1/5 stars? Can you have luck with it where others have failed with them, sure, but generally, you are likely to go with a 4+ star product.
Movie ratings DEFINITELY can sway my desire to see a movie, especially if it's a 90% or above.
Mad Max, for example, is a movie I had no desire seeing. However, after seeing it's very high scoring, and reading positive posts here on JSP, both have swayed me into seeing it when it comes out on Netflix.
Come on, logic.
product reviews on amazon are based on objective value of an item, films are subjective in nature in addition to objective such as proper camerawork/blocking/sound mixing etc.
I don't let ratings influence my decision to watch a film or movie at least once
