Movie was phenomenal. Gripping from start to finish. Then again, it seems everyone else knew it was based on a true story, but me. So, I didn't have any of the movie spoiled for me, before hand...

Some was true, some was fiction.

IE, the mother and child scene, there was no child. It was a chinese grenade and he fired twice, once and then again as the grenade exploded.
The butcher in the movie didn't exist, but he was basically based on two other insurgents. One of them a death squad leader that used power drills.
He never enlisted because of the bombings.
There was an olympic sniper named Mustafa, but he was only mentioned in passing in a paragraph. There was no hunting of him like portrayed.
He was an insurgent but kyle never saw him.
The long shot at the end, he actually shot a guy with a rocket launcher, just some random insurgent targeting a convey, not the sniper.
They also downplayed his outlook on the iraqis. He was pretty black and white with the war.
But it was still a fantastic movie. Cooper really stepped it up for that role.

edit: A thing I was wondering about though, why they left out him getting shot twice and caught in 6 IED explosions.

This ^^ sort of.. I felt like the movie failed to really express who the man was, and just moved from combat set piece to set piece. The lack of character development bothered me a great deal. It was war porn.

Reviews are VASTLY different between american ones and non-american ones.

I personally thought it was just another take on the American war hero story and struggle. It's overdone and frankly a cheap way to get an oscar nomination. Playing the patriotic card. Not that the performance was bad, but it didn't really outshine some of the other ones during the year.
