Yes. Tarantino found the story in the diary of one of the vampires who survived the attack and swindled her out of it for $10,000. She later sued him, but the case was dropped when he scheduled the court date for 2pm on a sunny day and she didnt show up

It was based on a true story, but they added some aspects to make it more suitable for hollywood

* The family they picked up had 2 sons, rather than a son and a daughter. They changed one to female.
* The Santanico Pandemonium character was fabricated. There was no real leader of the antagonists.
* The 2 main characters weren't really brothers. They were just partners who started committing crimes together after meeting in jail.
