was talking about him w/ friends earlier and they all think hes like the bee's knees, the best actor etc and im not saying he isnt a good actor but his name doesnt come up in my head when i think of great actors but idk maybe im tripping ive only seen a couple of movies with him

I hate him because he's a fixture at Laker games, but he's a great actor no doubt.

The fact that his name doesn't pop up in your head when you think of great actors might be because he doesn't tend to get many of the traditional "all-around likeable protagonist" role ala Tom Hanks or Will Smith. What makes Nicholson great is his ability to play a quirky/angry/evil character but mix some good in there so we end up with a multidimensional character. However, this ability wouldn't shine in the traditional lead roles that Hollywood casts for, so he doesn't get the megastar A list parts even though he has megastar A list talent.

The best movie he was in was A Few Good Men. (I'm surprised nobody mentioned that; that's where his most famous lines are from, like "you can't handle the truth!" etc.) If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it. It's a huge classic, and Nicholson's role in it was simply amazing. Don't let Tom Cruise turn you off, he may be a nutjob, but the dude could act in his day.

Other than that, I remember him from The Shining, Batman, Cuckoo's Nest, and some more recent forgettable movie. His role in The Shining stands out to me the most out of those (but not as much as Few Good Men).

What's funny is, I really didn't like his portrayal of Joker that much in Batman. But I loved his psycho portrayal in Shining, and that would have made a perfect Joker.
