I'm buying a computer from bestbuy, that has extra ram slots, wondering if i need to buy a specific type of ram, whether it's brand or type etc?

Never mix Ram. It cant mess up ram speeds and can cause issues. If you want to upgrade ram buy the same ram again, same speed and timing.
Always make sure xmp is on for the best ram speeds

Also pre builts usual only have one green ram stick which is usually OEM
So if you have the budget upgrade and buy a better ram kit.
The ram you will buy also depends on your cpu also. But as an example
DDR 4 8gb x 2 3600mhz cl16 and rx8 or rx16 depending on cpu aswell
