Firstly, my CPU is an i5 4460 3.2 stock, motherboard is msi z97 gaming 5 (only accepts lga1150 chips)

Should I upgrade to i7 4790k (lga1150) or would it be better to upgrade motherboard for modern CPUs, and get a CPU for it as I'm sure boards that are compatible with 1150 isn't compatible with modern chips.

I don't do much crazy gaming, destiny 2, and Diablo are really the only games I play.

Thanks!

If your budget allows it, get a new mobo and switch to Ryzen IMO.

Any low end X570 board with a 3600 or 5600x, or if you want to save a bit of money a B550 board would work fine as well.

If you're satisfied with your computer right now, meaning with the games you play and the graphics settings are ok with you, then go ahead and upgrade the CPU. It doesn't sound like you want/need to play games at a higher graphic setting.

But the CPU you're looking is an older model, and this means you will probably end up searching on the used markets like eBay for the best & cheapest pricing. Buying them new at a high/current pricing does not make sense.

Mobo and cpu

Upgrading just the CPU won't be worth it, cuz ur buying discontinued cpu on a outdated mobo

I'd upgrade your mobo for a modern CPU, anything midrange should be fine unless you want fancy RGB. Some of the older CPUS are just as expensive as their newer, better counterparts.

Is there a reason you want to upgrade your current CPU? Going to a 4790k might not give you a significant speed boost over what you already have.

Can't really make a recommendation without knowing the rest of your hardware, but I'd start off with looking for a new motherboard and CPU combo. I currently recommend AMD Ryzen series over Intel. Keep in mind that AMD will be phasing out their current AM4 socket chips and boards in the very near future with AM5 and DDR5 RAM. There are rumors that their new boards will support their older AM4 socket coolers.

You'll probably also need new DDR4 RAM, because I think your current board uses DDR3. If going with a Ryzen, you'll want to get 3200MHz CL16 or better. The following CPU's are all a good choice if you're looking to spend less: 3300x, 3600, 3600x (none of these have built-in graphics, so you'll need to use your own GPU). I don't remember if these include their own coolers, or if you have to buy one. You can probably find something good for ~$30 if they don't. For motherboards look at B550 chipset, something in the $100-180 range. Don't go overboard with these unless you're an overclocker or use lots of add-on hardware. If you decide you need a more powerful CPU later on, you can upgrade to a 5900x or 5950x when their prices come down a bit. 5600x is also a good choice, but it's usually over $300.

Another thing to consider is your GPU. Is it something recent or more than 3 years old? If it's old, you will definitely see a speed boost, but it might not be a big one.

My gpu is fine, it's a GeForce 2070. Please look at the post above yours.

The B550 and Ryzen 3300X will suffice for what you plan to do.
