Hi there,

In my studio we need to build a workstation which will have to run mainly 3D software.
That wouldn't be a problem but one of these is extremely hardware demanding. Name is Lumion 11, you can go check their website and check for sick requirements...
I have my own workstation and 3D software but my colleague, an architect, is obsessed with this software so we are planning to buy a machine.

Budget should be something around 2500-3000€.

GPU ULTRA requirements: 16.000 passmark or above

CPU ULTRA requirements: 2500 or above

Also I'd say at least 64 Gb RAM - but here, 3200 is necessary? Which CL?
1TB .M2 SSD + Eventually a second SATA for storage, but that's not mandatory for the moment.

I've made myself a build on pcpartpicker but I haven't built a tower in a while and I'm a bit outdated.
Moreover I am not confident with AMD CPU's which I'm reading are over-performing Intel's by a lot nowadays.

My biggest doubts come to the motherboard and proper cooling system.
I don't need RGB led or anything fancy: that thing must work only and isn't for showing.
I DON'T want a QUADRO GPU, I've worked with these already but aren't really needed for this kind of work.

This is my build right now but I am not sure about it to be honest...

https://it.pcpartpicker.com/list/xBTfht

Any suggestion, variation, criticism and so on is HIGHLY appreciated! I may have surely checked some expensive stuff I don't really need.

Last but not least, I am buying this from Italy, EU. So I'd appreciate if you check Italy on pcpartpicker to make sure components are available in my country too.

Thanks in advantage!!!

Yes,

Opt for 5900x and a x570 mobo
3600 cas 16 ram
Get a more generic ssd, while samsung is the best yoru paying a lot for a name.
Additional HD would be ideal for storage unless you have network storage.
You application says to get a 3080
Can opt for a cheaper case and/or PSU

Can't find x570 mobo, could you be more specific?

I see there are no prices for the 5900x right now, I think I have to wait a bit for it.

What do you mean with 3600 cas 16 RAM? Isn't like the one I chose already?

Any suggestion for more generic but non-crap ssd? Western Digital?

Also Lumion doesn't really say to get a 3080 but a GPU more than 16.000 passmark with more than 11 GB VRAM.

For the case I can't really figure out how much space I need for the cooler, I don't want to get something too tight. Any suggestion?

Thank you!

You’re going to have to join a discord for bot alerts if you want any chance at a 5900x/5950x or pay double the price buying from a scalper. Join StockDrop on discord they seem to be the quickest. Make sure you’re logged in and use apple pay buy the combo item and return the other item or if you’re lucky the combo comes with a mobo that’s good. If you don’t want to do this or wait a couple months for stock to get better just buy a 3950x.
These ram G.Skill F4-3600C16Q-64GTZNC 64GB 4x16GB DDR4 3600MHz Memory Module https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VRMTVH7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_1YDZFbB8SRDNB
With that budget I’d get the asus dark hero x570 but any x570 in the 300-400 range would be fine. Sabrent/wd are good but Samsung actually on sale atm on Amazon it’s almost the same price I’d just buy it. For gpu join that discord to grab a 3070/3090 there’s zero chance you’re getting a 3080 unless there’s a micro center near you. Case I’d go with lian li o11 xl will fit anything and is best looking case imo also has room for 10 fans.
Forgot to add cooler I’d go with be quiet pure loop 360

Alright, thanks for the hints

Anyway I'm not that in rush, I was considering to wait a bit too. Are those CPU going to be so hard to get even in a month or two?

Also how about AMD GPU's? Don't they even worth to be considered?

I think supply will get better by February. You could try and get a 3080 ti when it releases in January and build if you can get one. I don’t think supply will go back to normal til March/April as in be able to order any gpu when you want. With a 3000 budget you could just buy a 3090 and build now if you wanted. 3090 are pretty easy to get since it’s high budget and the least wanted out of the 3000 series also has 24 gb vram.
I don’t know much about 3D software and such but I remember hearing nvidia is better for certain things like streaming and content creation. For pure performance amd gpu is better I believe. Not 100% sure on these so gotta do your own research. I plan to play cyberpunk so I wanted nvidia for the ray tracing also was the only gpu I could get. Amd cards were sold out before the add to cart button even showed up. Also amd aib cards were overpriced on release some 6800xt were 800-900. If I had the choice of 3080 vs 6800xt 3080ti vs 6900xt I’d go nvidia every time if they are within 50$. Nvidia said they will also have SAM in the future as well.

Alright, thanks! Unfortunately here 3090 appear to be really expensive card, varying from 2000 to 2500€, so that might not be an option unless the prices drop down.
Another option I was considering is using SLI, maybe with 2 x 3060ti cards. That might do the trick having more horse power for the rendering.

Usually 3D software don't really need all that power, until you go for the rendering. But then here one can just make some low quality test and then make the software run overnight to complete high definition renders. More power = smaller render time.

But in this case Lumion renders real time, like Unreal Engine or like any videogames we usually play. The difference is that you work on models, imports, lights, texture displacement, reflections/retractions all while visualizing it in real time. And that is massively power consuming. Thus the high req machine is needed.

Thanks for the hints, I think we'll wait a bit!

Oh wow that’s almost double the price in the US. Most cards are 1500 highest is 1800. Ya I’d wait for the 3080ti or 3070ti.
