I have a gaming computer with an 8600K and a GTX 980 that I've been using with a S2417DG. Unfortunately, I don't play competitive games anymore and I also feel like it's a bit more fire power than I need for what I do, so I started searching for something for web browsing, watching videos, and to play Everquest and some non-intensive games (Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, Kerbal Space Station, Torchlight 2, etc.) on. I'm kind of shocked, however, because I thought that if I sold my computer (probably get 1100 for it all), I could buy a luxury laptop that would achieve what I wanted. I've been looking at laptops like the XPS15, EliteBook, Zenbook, etc., but it is pretty obscene in terms of return for price. No discrete graphics or a MX150 (which might do, but come on... I think just a 1050 would do, maybe a 1050 Ti), and terrible screens. I think that my most important deciding factor is the screen. I look around though and what the heck is up with the display response time for these laptops? The XPS15, for example, rocks a 65ms G2G response time. Just google "xps ghosting" and marvel.
I do have a Sony X900E in my living room that I've thought about just hooking my computer up to. However, I'd need a wireless keyboard, an HDMI cable, and then a lap desk. Plus, I think the UI would look terrible in a number of games. The UI in Everquest is notoriously difficult. One of the reasons I thought about selling my computer is that we don't have a permanent place for it. I keep it in an armoire and have to pull the monitor, the computer, the surge protector/power strip, mouse and keyboard, etc., out and set it up every time I want to play it. That got old fast. I take a look at some gaming-specific laptops, but there's either super-budget with crappy screens, loud fan noise, etc., or extravagant laptops. The MSI Stealth looks like it'd fit what I want, but good God it's $1500!
Anyways, I just wanted some opinions. Am I overlooking a swath of computers? Or does going to a laptop mean paying extra to go back 10 years in monitor technology? Should I hookup to the X900E and see what it's like?
Thank you.
