this is the product that leads me to this question.
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16811133317

upon order i had the option of buying with or w/o a riser cable. specifically for the GPU connection, allowing me to put the GPU on the shelf.
i opted out of ordering with the cable due to numerous reviews saying the cable was very cheap and the cause of many failures.

i've tried researching this before and couldn't find a direct answer then.
my question is, what should i look for in a well-made riser cable?

From tjhe manual, which I DL'd at Thermaltake site, there are two methods for installing vid cards. The method shown in the pic below, and the other method that DOES require an extension cable. The "other" method uses a different vid card shelf. But this is not necessary.

/e The OTHER method, that does require the extension cable...

reviews say the stock cable often fried components.
so i am looking to buy one of better quality

So read reviews on other ones?

Cables2Go has great cables and ridiculous prices. BUT, find the cable there then Google the part # to find it for a better price.

As for which are better, hardly any1 uses them. But there's not really that much to them, so any differences would be minuscule.

i found some cables manufactured by 3m that had good reviews. it appears what i was looking for was shielding.

i was ignoring a lot of thermaltake reviews at first due to how bad the rep of their "prior" cables.
they have new shielded cables since last year that are getting good reviews.

i'm done with this thread.
if anyone is curious about riser cards for gaming though, this video was referred to and pretty much speaks for itself.
