Dads processor took a crap on his computer; wants a cheap upgrade.

Dell Motherbored model: 0F896N
Current CPU: AMD Athlon II x4 620 AM3

Wants to upgrade to this model

I see its AM3 Socket; Just wondering if I can slap this in for him, thanks for all input.

Are you sure it's the CPU and not the motherboard? CPU's rarely burn out.

Best processor upgrade would be a Phenom II x6 1035t 95w, assuming the bios supports it, otherwise I would get a new athlon x4.

Because it's a DELL motherboard, it probably won't work. A standard motherboard like say an ASUS motherboard, you could probably do it.

Things an AM3 motherboard requires to be able to use an AM3+ CPU...

BIOS upgrade, the motherboard needs to be able to support the current and the wattage of the AM3+ CPUs.
There are one or two other things, but they are pretty inconsequential.

I guess I should rephrase. Its not dead; it more or less cant keep up with his love of POE.. Everything else has been upgraded; 8GB ram; SSD; Nvidia GT730

Game gets laggy at times and hes convinced its the processor so he wants an upgrade. Not sure if BIOS has been updated or not.

Is there overheating? Even an old core 2 or athlon x2 can run POE just fine.

Your dad is better off buying a whole new system or upgrading CPU/MOBO/RAM together. You can get an FX 8320 and motherboard for about the price of the FX 8350 but ram prices are hiked atm and it looks like you can't reuse what you have, considering it's likely DDR2.

E: You can get a Ryzen 3 + mobo + 8gb ddr4 for $250, if that's within reach it's definitely worth the upgrade.

EHHH not really. even my haswell i5 chews its food a bit in pack size beyond breaches and multiplayer. Core 2 duo will get u to like act 5 then you'll start feeling the pinch a bit. Don't trust the system requirements on PoE they're outdated and only apply to everything leading up to Brutus now.

My core 2 duo e6750 did fine in PoE until the patch where they released dominus.. dominus demolished it. Then i upgraded to a Phenom II x4, and Cast on Crit demolished it.
