Budget: $1500
More specific use (what games, what programs): Ability to play new games as they come out for several years.
Planned time until purchase: <2 mo
Do you need an Operating System?: No
Do you have any specific preferred components?: Motherboard w/ Wifi, Large SSD
Do you need a sound or wireless card?: No
Do you want stock cooling or do you plan on overclocking?: OC
Do you need a monitor? mouse? keyboard?: Monitor
Zip code/location? (Shipping costs): 65807

Also plan on using this for a research program that is processor and RAM intensive, so highest clock speed processor and most RAM that the budget can afford if there's space.

Would also like to be able to expand graphics cards number in the future, but I really don't even know if it's something worth considering if it increases the cost since I don't know if multiple GPU makes sense vs just upgrading cards.

If it's cheaper to go with a wifi card, then I'll do that.

this should last a few years. with the exception of the video card, and rising demand for vram in games.

with this build you may want to upgrade the video to dual cards sli/crossfire, and maybe add another set of ram in the future, for now, this should more than suffice

the OP can choose to go with a lower cpu if they so wish.

...for myself, i build each system the way id want it (trying to stay within budget). yes there is a miniscule difference between the 1700/1700x/1800x, however it is still a difference.

everyone has their own opinions, favorite/preferred/hated brands. Myself; as i said, i build it as i would want it. i would prefer processing performance over a few dollars when it comes to a cpu. fact of the matter is the 1700/1700x are just more "trendy" right now, with both having a higher market sharing rate and cheaper price than the 1800x.

also: the OP didnt fill the entire sticky out.. some parts are cheaper if they will follow through with MIR / change merchants. I have my partspicker set to not include MIR promos.

the userbenchmark difference would matter if OP was only running them at stock speeds

Yeah don't get the 1700x or listen to this Canadian dude he's clueless

WiFi card is about the same price as buying wifi on board and will give you a better signal/speed

Also nice monitor @Canadian born

Definitely not.

Thinking about I7-8700K and foregoing monitor for now to stay within budget. I can probably get a decent monitor for cheap used from my university since the graphics design department / major / whatever regularly upgrades their equipment. My research program will thank me for it, and since I'm running jobs that will take weeks a faster processor will greatly reduce wait time.

What is your guys opinion on how long the graphics cards will play for? Like how long until upgrade needed between 1060 vs 1070 vs 1080. I can justify a greater expense if they will last significantly longer before needing an upgrade, but I doubt the difference is great enough that it will justify the cost.

You ask about a build then people come in and give knowledge and you reply with "definitely not"

Well he's actually "definitely correct" since you stated you are ocing

They limit the stock clock speed on the lower models

8700k is overkill imo

1070 will do you for a few years unless you get 4k
