I did some research and tried to put together a build for what I want to use my new desktop for.
Here is what I put together so far:
http://i.imgur.com/0nci4rq.pngTotal cost for now is around 2.5k (I can go under or over, but don't want to overspend too much for things I don't need).
That is not including monitor.
I also checked the parts for compatability on pcpartpicker, and it all checked out.
What I will use desktop for:
Gaming (LoL, older games and newer games. Mostly RPG stuff and not so much shooters).
Downloading/uploading and storing media
Streaming media
Browsing and playing idle games
High resolution stuff, since I've so far only experienced 1080p
How I will use it:
Pretty much turned on always
Tabs and programs opened without needing to close tabs/programs to save RAM because of pc slowing down
Concerns I have, ordered by priority:
-resolution on screen, and what screen to get.
I want a good 4k screen, and have otped for IPS. But ones with good framerates are very expensive, and I am worried that I won't have the GPU to play games effectively in 4k anyways.
So the 4k screen I've picked out was the best I could find considering quality and price, and that they have in stock. Framerate of 60hz. Good for movies/series/browsing etc, and good enough for games? I'm not used to high framerates anyways, definitely not above 60hz.
I'm also thinking that a screen bigger than 27 inches would start to get too big.
Alternatively I could go for a 2.5k IPS screen for gaming with 140+ framerate, which my RIG should be able to do on high settings, but then I will pay more money and might end up regretting not getting a 4k.
This is a screen at twice the price than the one in my picture that I considered:
https://www.komplett.no/product/864480/gaming/skjerm-tilbehoer/skjermer/acer-32-predator-led-g-sync-xb321hkBut I believe it needs an Nvidia GPU to use G-sync, and it's a lot of money to pay for a screen (also they don't have it in stock as of now).
-Storage (SSD M.2) and also motherboard
I just read about M.2 and thought getting one was a good idea.
I then envisioned having a 120GB M.2 drive for OS, and a 500GB M.2 drive for games, but that might be unnescessary?
To do that I'd need to upgrade my motherboard to one with two M.2 slots (I think), and that would increase the price noticably.
So I went with one of the fastest/best priced M.2 for my OS, programs and games (Samsung 960 EVO 500GB).
I'm wondering if that sounds good, and/or if maybe I should increase the storage to 1GB (twice the price)
No need for regular SSD drives then; they are just a little bit cheaper anyways (right?)
Storage drive for media is regular 3.5 inch SATA 4TB
-GPU
I've got a Geforce GTX 980-M on my laptop, so I want a rig that is at least noticably more powerful than my laptop.
I went with the 1070, since 1080 costs over 1000$ in my country, and GPU advancement is always moving ahead.
I don't believe I can fully utilize new games in ultra and 4k at stable 60hz with a 1080 anyways, so my thoughts were to get the 1070, and if I want to in some years, then swap for a new GPU that can run games in UHD, at a managable price
Also, if games struggly to run at smooth 60fps in 4k, I can always turn down the resolution even on a 4k monitor (right?)
-RAM
I think 16GB should be enough for my needs? And if I need more I can easilly upgrade later (right?)
I considered getting 32GB (2x 16GB, instead of 2x 8GB), but twice the price.
Getting 16GB, if I upgrade later I can fit another 2x 8GB sticks.
-Case
I honestly don't know which one to get, but a friend recommended that one, and I see it's popular and fits my build.
I do want that it's quiet though (and of course good enough cooling)
-PSU
upgrading seems to give little benefit for the cost
EDIT: if you also got a recommendation for a good headset, please do let me know. I've got a good mouse and keyboard, just a crappy headset.
