So, I own a CROSSHAIR V FORMULA-Z mobo and there are 6 audio ports... mic, left, middle, right, blah blah blah...
My question is, what kind of setup would require the use of left, right, middle, sub? Are their speakers that could be powered over these ports through just a 3.5mm jack or do these companies just think you may want to hookup multiple sets of self powered speakers to your computer? I wouldn't mind having a neat surround sound setup in my office if I wouldn't have to plug a bunch of power cables in either. Something just really interests me about these ports, as if they have some real potential by themselves instead of just being something I use input / output ports and pondering over the other 4.

5.1/7.1 would work here

Imo, a pair of high quality speakers (Klipsch) or a high quality headset Trump's any need for a sound card.

Gross... Trumps*

TOPIC CLOSED:

I feel silly, I finally took a look at the back of a volume control unit that was 5.1. For some reason I expected one single input to be split by the control to the other outputs. Like an auxillary port essentially. I am pleased to find this is not the case. Thanks for input. :)

Lol, right! I'm currently using an old-school device as speakers. They are nice and loud though when I want.

Panasonic SA-AK100 CD Stereo System
W/left+right into 3.5mm connector. Gets the job done and owned since about 2004.
