I'm looking at buying this laptop, but I've been out of the hardware game for a while and I'm not sure if I can just toss an SSD in it.

If I can, do I just need a regular 2.5" drive, or do I need M Sata or something?

Also, any recommendations on a cheaper SSD for it? Don't need anything with a lot of storage. It's for mostly-light gaming (Overwatch will be the most demanding game for a while).

definitely go with Samsung for your SSD hands down the best.

Yes, you could do that.

You will most probably, need to remove the HDD and replace it with an SSD.
Which will also mean that you will have to clone the HDD to the SSD...if possible.

Otherwise, you will have to do a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

All of the drivers you would need can be found here: https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GL62M-7th-Gen-GTX-1050Ti.html#down-driver&Win10%2064

/e A clone from a 1TB hard drive to an SSD with less capacity, is not easily done. It's probably impossible.

/ee You might luck out. Some laptops have hookups for TWO drives. But they usually cost more. They are usually in the $1500 CAD range.

/eee Like this. They already added a 1TB HDD and a 256GB SSD....all else is the same.

I know it seems smarter to get a laptop with just an HDD, and then buy an SSD cheaper, and install it. Manufacturers know this as well.
The recovery partition on the HDD only laptop, will make it very difficult to shrink the OS partition, so you can clone it to a smaller device.

That's why a clean install will most probably be required. It's easier and costs the same in the long run...to just get the one with the SSD/HDD already.

Remember, you're not just paying for the SSD in the laptop I linked. You're also paying for the 2nd drive slot and the cooling to keep your laptop happy.

I was also checking out these two, as I figured it would be annoying to have to reinstall Windows etc. on a new drive for a laptop, especially with drivers and shit.

What's the difference? What the hell is a TN panel?

And if anyone else can find a good deal on a laptop, I'd love to see it. Aiming for a 1050ti or better, but a 980m would suffice if the price is right.

I would rather get the ones with a 256GB SSD, than the ones with the 128GB SSD.

You can use the 128GB SSD, but you will spend a lot of time deciding what to put on the SSD and what to put on the HDD.

It's up to you whether you would rather have the 1050Ti or the 1060.

/e There are two main kinds of panels used in screens. TN and IPS.

TN are ok, but they will have less viewing angle than the IPS do.

TN is like 170/160 degrees, and IPS is like 178/178 Degrees.

All that needs to go on the SSD is the operating system. Games and movies aren't really going to benefit much. I'm not worried about load times in games because I play mostly lighter stuff and games that don't have many load screens.

I wipe free space with CCleaner then shrink the partition.
Should be good to move to something like a 250gb most likely
Defrag and wipe free space again ofc.
