So I have recently found the land of SSD's ... and heard they are pretty sweet.

I have a 2010 computer, i7, not sure the gen. I was looking to get an SSD to make it quicker, and add another 8gb of ram. Well now I'm knee deep in "oh what else" ... looking at a GPU, but not sure if it's compatible with my powersupply and/or motherboard. I play mainly SC, D2/D3, WoW & CS:GO.

It's from 2010, would any new GPU work with it? or is that a dumb question too.

ill check when I get home, just brainstorming at work lol, ill likely have to open-er up unless theres software to see exactly what I've got. The i7 will be easy to find, but not sure what type of motherboard etc. I'll check my receipts. Stay tuned.. haha

you rock, was wondering how to get that stuff easily

here we go...

I live in Canada and this was about $1350 back then... it wasn't a prebuilt but built by a company that builds our local university computers...recommended by my dad and a few other people.

Again, I only play old ass games, and I have played WoW (3rd exp) and it was decent...I do some graphic design, it really seems recently my comp is gettin slow from lack of RAM. I'm also going to completely re-format at the end of January (after my cont. education course is done)..

If I can get away with just upgrading some ram, I may just do that... but depending on if this CPU can be upgradeable w/ a new GPU, I may just keep it and build around (but have the new parts be compatible with a future processor)...if that makes sense lol.

Here is SSD and 12GB of RAM... https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/QJbdGf

Here is SSD and 24GB of RAM... https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/zzNWJV

However...

You are beating a dead horse. It's time to move to a new platform. I would seriously consider doing that. In Canada it will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500 CDN.

Appreciate that. My OS can take 24GB? Would I remove the existing 6, or add to it?

SSD, I can have the OS boot from that right, and it would be used for other things, can I also have my 1TB still be utilized? I do download a bunch of stuff. I think I've seen it called a hybrid? Windows 7 allows that I assume?

I do know it's a dead horse but with the games I am currently running it would be alright. Looks like a $260 'upgrade' on the almost-dead-horse, vs a 1580 new build. Hmm, that being said 2 of those games are dyin' fast! Lol.

Would these prices drop slightly with Xmas/Boxing day sales do you think? I am just starting to look at prices and not sure if these are deals/steals.

The OS will take 24GB as will the motherboard.

Yes, you can use the SSD as the boot drive, which is the smart way to use an SSD. You can still use your 1TB drive, if you stick with your current X58 motherboard.
A hybrid drive is a hard drive with an SSD added into it (same chassis). They are NOT a wise choice.

IF, you ever decide to move into modern times, you will want to replace that Sata 2 hard drive with a modern Sata 3 hard drive.

Honestly I would still do a complete new build. Very soon you won't be able to get that RAM anymore. Same with the motherboard itself. So, if the RAM dies or the motherboard does, you will have to build new, anyways.

/e Btw, I could probably make that full upgrade cheaper, but I choose not to. I believe there is a certain price point that you should not go below, if you want a computer that runs well.
