Basically I was looking for something in the ballpark of
• 15.4" screen unless you'd like a larger one
• i7 6000 series CPU. I saw a few 7000 series but that's up to you.
• Discrete GPU nvidia 900 or 1000 series with 3 or 4 GB dedicated memory (2GB would be fine as well but you can usually find a different variant of the same card with more for the same price)
• At least 16GB RAM (for 6000 series intel CPU the RAM will be DDR4). frequency isn't hugely important as long as it's not under 1600
• Decent amount of USB ports (at least one 3.0 for faster transfers and some 2.0)
• HDMI port incase you ever want to plug the laptop into a tv or monitor
• windows 10, 64 bit
laptops are a little more difficult to be picky about a motherboard but it will obviously come with one spec'd for the stuff inside.
There are a million laptops that looks just about like this one so shop around and see what you can find. Especially if you have manufacturer preference. After you find one you want check a few sites that sell it to see if you can get a better price, like amazon. manufacturer websites typically charge more but may let you customize.
