I have some things I want to verify. I’ve never built a computer before and won’t have any help doing this one… please excuse the wall of text. Here is a picture of my motherboard, along with some additional info I found in the manual which may or may not be necessary for you to help me out. The orange boxes indicate what I plan to use.

The rear case 140mm fan comes with the case. I bought two more 140mm fans. All 3 fans are 3-pin. The motherboard accepts 4-pin. Do I just plug in the fans so the 4th pin (VCC) isn’t used? Also which fan should be 1, 2, and 3 and how does the motherboard know which fan needs to spin faster to get better airflow… or does it regulate them all the same unless I have some kind of fan controller? I have 1 exhaust at the rear and 2 intakes in the front.

The ATX_12V_2X4 plug is for the CPU correct? I also read something about using a second connector for extreme overclocking. I may consider overclocking down the road. Where would this additional CPU power connector plug in?

Also, I plan on getting some aftermarket card reader panel to put where the disk drive goes in my case (Phanteks Enthoo Pro M). Where would all this stuff plug into on the motherboard?. For example something like this (even tho this one looks like garbage):

With my build, I plan to use the 24 pin ATX cable for the motherboard, an 8(4+4) pin for the CPU, an 8(6+2) pin for the GPU, and 2 SATA cables. Is this all I need with my fully modular PSU? The GPU cable also breaks off into another 6 pin. Is this for SLI? And why is the cable labeled as VGA? The SATA cables also break off into 2 more SATA connectors. Is this for RAID? With these two break outs… can I just desolder them? Or would I need to recrimp the single connectors?

One last thing. I should plug everything in outside my case to verify that the computer posts before installing everything into my case? Is the only benefit of doing this so that I don’t need to uninstall things to troubleshoot/return stuff if anything is DOA?

I think that’s it for now. I will most likely have more questions before I start building or during. Thanks in advance!

The CPU cooler fan wire, must be plugged into the: CPU-FAN header on the motherboard.

The case fans can be plugged into the PSU or the motherboard. If the motherboard, then the number of the header doesn't matter, and you can plug a 3 pin into a 4 pin motherboard header. The clip on the motherboard header will only let you plug the case fans in...one way.

Yes the 8/4+4 pin connector is for the Atx_12v_2x4 connector on the motherboard.

No, the GPU cable is made that way, because some vid cards, require BOTH the 8+2 and the 6 pin to work properly.

The SATA cables from the PSU are made that way to be able to power 2 SATA devices with only one cable.

Yes, the reason you build it outside the case, when you're new at this, is to make it easier to troubleshoot or RMA.

Finally got my CPU cooler and building... The VGA cable for my PSU is a 6+2 that has a 6 pin attached to it. My GPU takes the 8 pins..... but the 6 pin attached to the 6+2 would just dangle?? This will look shit shit.

Yeah it will ....dangle. Tuck it behind the 6+2.

I could get cable extensions to clean this up right? I know a lot of people use them. But does adding an additional length do anything to resistance or reliability? I fly RC airplanes and am always cognizant of wire length/gauge and extensions.

Shouldn't need extensions. But the nice PSU cables (the color of your choice) ....aren't cheap.
Generally the PSU is at the bottom. You just run all the PSU cables, behind the motherboard. Most cases have holes to allow you to do that.

Couple folk on here, have done some really nice things with PSU cables.

I just meant those colored cable extensions so only what is exposed looks nice. I was considering sleeving everything myself, but I don't think I want to do that anymore. Getting extensions I saw was an option. Although the PSU cables are all black so I may just stay put with what I have.

Extensions work fine, But you'll just have to hide more cable length behind the back panel.


Ensourced does quality work. I bought a set of cheap custom cables through a different place, and it ended up frying my PSU due to bad connections/etc.

If the extensions were a few feet maybe... But adding 6"~ onto a cable isn't going to affect it.


I got a hobbico nexstar sitting in the corner of my room that i really need to fly next summer :(
