Current rig is about 3 years old. Games played are Diablo3/Counter strike. world of warcraft every now and then.

wont have need for keyboard/mouse/SSD/monitors as i will use my current ones.

some time within next month

here's what processor and mobo i use currently

System Model MS-7821

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670K CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3401 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB

You got a pretty nice system. Put a decent CPU cooler on like EVO 212. OC it to 4.3-4.5Ghz
And it will be able to run not bottleneck a GTX 1080.

Buy something like a gtx 1070 for 420$ and you will be to run all games in max settings.

no motherboard there. but yeah haswell CPU's are still very relevant. specially K model's.
You would not gain much by upgrading to a skylake and DDR4 RAM.

MS-7821 is my mobo, MSI mobo. would it be able to handle a gto 1080?

Oh I guess that's a Z87-G45.
Yeah it's even a pci-e 3.0 so you will get 100% bandwidth.
Just overclock the cpu some. The Z87 chipset is overclockable with K Haswell.

So yeah it will not bottleneck a gtx 1080.
